Steve & Lee Uecker share a legacy of service, love for the open road.
Steve and Lee Uecker are a father and son team determined to support others through their work and community outreach. Uecker-Witt Funeral Home is a Fond du Lac institution: a third generation family business established in 1961. Steve Uecker took over the business from his father in 1971 and finally passed the torch to his son Lee in 2016.
Along the way, the family has had the opportunity to serve the community by working tirelessly to help others carry out their legacies. Honoring a person’s final wishes and supporting families through loss has become the family’s calling. The father and son duo note that they feel especially drawn to work with veterans and their families.
There are deep roots of military service in the Uecker’s family, stretching back to service in WWII. Steve himself served in Vietnam as an Army officer where he was attached to the 4 th Infantry Division. He joined at the age of 21, serving from 1966-1970. Those years of service have left Steve determined to support area veterans causes. Currently, they are raising funds to donate to the Fond du Lac County Veterans Service Office (VSO), specifically for the transportation of local veterans to various VA medical facilities throughout the state.
There are at least 300 veterans in the county that require transportation. The county maintains a few vehicles for this purpose and Uecker-Witt’s collective donations will specifically go towards fuel, maintenance, and the eventual replacement of vehicles. Right now, the Uecker’s are asking for donations of at least $10 which they will match for their contribution to the Fond du Lac VSO. Next on the horizon for the father-son team is participating in the 10 th Annual Heroes, Horses & Hogs Mustang and Harley show on August 4 th at Open Road Harley-Davidson in Fond du Lac. This patriotic event celebrates two American icons – the Ford Mustang and the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle, while at the same time paying tribute to the great Americans who have served our country. Steve and Lee are thrilled that Uecker-Witt will be a Gold sponsor of this year’s event, which will benefit Salute the Troops of Fond du Lac.
The event is especially exciting for Steve and Lee as they will be participating with their rides. Steve is a life-long lover of Powersports, learning to ride early. In 2007, he got his first touring bike, an experience he described as “pure stress relief”. “Riding has made me a better driver and more aware of my environment. I also just love the fellowship – Harley riders have a true ‘buddy system’!” Now Steve has a 2016 CVO Street Glide 110 in Black Licorice with Midnight Cobalt flames that he absolutely loves.
Meanwhile, Lee has been a thrill-seeker since an early age. His first words? “The plane!” Always seeking challenges, Lee is a licensed commercial pilot and certified flight instructor. Not only that, but this self-described “gear head” is a die-hard Ford fan who owns a F150 Raptor and Mustang that he just purchased this spring. The car, a 2008 Shelby Mustang GT500, with Torch Red “Arrest Me Red” paint, pushes 650 + HP and is one of only 37 units built that year with the red exterior, black/red interior and racing stripe delete option. Lee loves the performance, and says he always wanted a muscle car.
Together, this father and son team are turning out to help make this year’s Heroes, Horses, and Hogs event a success. Registration is now open for the event, which is organized by Open Road Harley-Davidson, Holiday Automotive, and Wisnet.com. See more information at www.horsesandhogs.com.
